Who to Notify When Moving House Checklist
Moving to a new home in London can be exciting, but also daunting. There is so much to think about and a lot of information to update. Staying organised is key, so here’s a checklist to help you remember who to notify when you move.

You need to notify between 20 and 30 organisations when you move house. The most urgent are HMRC, your bank, your employer and the DVLA. Everything else can follow in the first week after completion. This checklist covers every category, in order of priority, so nothing slips through the gap.
Do It on Completion Day or the Day Before
These notifications affect money, post and legal records, so get them done first.
| Who | What to update | How |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Mail | Set up mail redirection, ideally from a month before | royalmail.com/track-my-mail/redirection |
| HMRC | Income Tax, Self Assessment, Child Benefit, Tax Credits | gov.uk/tell-hmrc-change-address |
| Bank and building society | Account address, cards, statements | App, branch or phone |
| Employer or payroll | Payslips, P60, pension contributions | HR or payroll department |
| Electoral register | Required by law within set time of moving | gov.uk/register-to-vote |
| Council Tax | Cancel at the old address, register at the new one | Both local councils |
| GP and dentist | NHS registration is address-linked | Call the practice directly |
Within the First Week
These affect your insurance, driving record and utility billing.
| Who | What to update |
|---|---|
| DVLA | Driving licence address, free and required by law, at gov.uk/change-address-driving-licence |
| Vehicle insurance | Your address affects your premium, and not updating it can void a claim |
| Home contents and buildings insurance | Cancel old policies, set up cover at the new address |
| Utilities (gas, electric, water) | Final meter reads at the old address, open an account at the new one |
| TV Licence | Update your address at tvlicensing.co.uk |
| Broadband and phone provider | Transfer or cancel, and book an engineer if a new line is needed |
| Council (permits, bins) | Register for parking permits, confirm bin collection days |

- Healthcare specialists such as physio, optician and orthodontist

A Note on Mail Redirection
Royal Mail redirection is the most reliable way to avoid missed post, and you set it up for a fee for three, six or twelve months. Arrange it before completion day, not after. It covers letters addressed to anyone at your old property, so add every adult in the household by name. Redirection does not update your address with anyone, it just buys you time to work through this checklist without losing post in the gap.

Frequently Asked Questions
Start with Royal Mail redirection four to six weeks before your completion date. HMRC, your bank and your employer can be notified in the final week before or on the day itself. Work through the rest of the list in the first week after you move in.
Yes. You are required by law to keep your driving licence address current. The update is free and takes a few minutes at gov.uk/change-address-driving-licence. Failing to update it can result in a fine.
Not always. If your old practice is still convenient you can stay. If you move outside the practice’s catchment area, you will usually need to register with a new GP, so check with your current practice first.
Your policy is rated partly on where the vehicle is kept overnight, so not updating your address can invalidate the policy and void a claim. Update it as soon as your completion date is confirmed.
No. Redirection is set up per name, so add every adult in the household separately when you apply, otherwise their post will not be redirected.
